France's leading human rights group criticized the government's recent move to make acquiring French citizenship more difficult following new instructions from Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. The Defenseur des Droits stressed that the current naturalisation process is already excessively complicated, leading to lengthy waiting times for applicants. The organization's head highlighted that the pressing issue instead lies in the numerous complaints about residency permit renewals, which affect well-integrated individuals facing administrative challenges, calling for attention on their rights rather than additional barriers to citizenship.
"Acquiring nationality is already excessively complicated," Claire Hédon, the head of Defenseur des Droits, told French news outlet Franceinfo on Tuesday.
"I am worried regarding the rights of foreigners in France... We are talking about people who are perfectly integrated and do not pose any problem."
