Macron backs holding referendums on French social and economic reforms
Briefly

French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans for a series of consultations to discuss major economic and social reforms, potentially through referendums. He acknowledged the proposal from Prime Minister François Bayrou to address France's debt via a referendum. However, he ruled out public votes on immigration and pension reform issues. In a recent interview, Macron also addressed international affairs, stating that new sanctions against Russia would be imposed soon if no ceasefire with Ukraine is achieved, signaling a proactive stance on European security matters.
"I want us to organise a series of consultations," Macron told TF1 television, adding that the votes would take place on one day in coming months and address "major" economic and social reforms.
While he would not go into details, Macron stressed he was open to a suggestion by Prime Minister François Bayrou, who has proposed a referendum on a plan to reduce France's debt.
Macron rejected the idea of putting immigration issues to a popular vote despite repeated requests from the right and far right, and also rejected the idea of a vote on the 2023 pension reforms.
On the subject of Ukraine, he said that European countries would impose a new package of sanctions 'within days' if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine.
