"The family was not financially set, but at least they knew that they didn't have to worry about that for a little while,"
"I was very driven by the support and the love that they had given to me when I was sick, even though I didn't really recognize that at the time,"
"They didn't really have to do anything for me, but they just wanted to help me."
"Given that they've already helped my family and I so much, I was surprised that they even offered (to help again),"
Destinee Coronado was diagnosed at age 10 with stage three ovarian cancer after a hospital discovered a football-sized tumor on her ovary. She underwent five months of chemotherapy and later recovered; she is now 18 and starting her first year at San Jose State University. Medical bills depleted her parents' savings and nearly forced a condo sale. Shop with a Cop Silicon Valley Foundation launched a fundraiser that collected $10,000 to cover bills and stabilize the family. Seven years later the foundation aims to raise $15,000 from Wish Book to help pay Coronado's college expenses, and Coronado expresses gratitude and surprise at their ongoing support.
