"The drone coverage has been game-changing because it puts viewers in the athlete's perspective. Traditional sports coverage relies on wide, perpendicular shots. With drones running parallel to athletes - right in front or behind them - you get a real sense of how fast they're moving."
"It makes a difference that Jonas is there. There's a special touch in the movements and what he chooses to see and show."
OBS deployed more than two dozen drones to capture athlete-perspective footage across nearly all Olympic sports, operating both indoors and outdoors except in ice hockey and curling. Pilots with deep knowledge of the specific sports control the drones using goggles that show the drone’s view. Drones run parallel to athletes and always fly behind them, never above or in front, to convey speed while managing safety. The deployment follows years of testing and consultations with athletes and international governing bodies. Some pilots are former top athletes, adding sport-specific judgment to shot selection.
