Southwest Airlines has implemented a new policy requiring passengers to keep portable battery chargers visible during flights starting May 28. This decision follows numerous safety incidents related to overheating and explosions of such devices. Keeping chargers visible is believed to mitigate risks, avoiding contact with other items in bags. In addition to this policy, Southwest recently introduced USB ports on its aircraft to lessen the need for portable chargers. Other airlines, like AirAsia and Thai Airways, have also adopted similar restrictions on portable chargers for safety reasons.
"When a portable charger/power bank is used during a flight, it must be out of any baggage and remain in plain sight."
"Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of its Customers and Employees," a Southwest Airlines spokesperson shared.
The good news for Southwest passengers is that the airline introduced USB ports on its aircraft in 2023, which means a battery charging device isn't always necessary.
The updated policy took effect on May 28... to help keep the entire aircraft safe.
