Tesla Accused of Killing Family, Plus Their Dog, by Steering Vehicle Head-on Into Oncoming Semi-Truck
"Based on representations the Blaines heard made by Musk and Tesla," the complaint states, per The Independent, "[they] believed [it] was a safer driver than a human driver of convention[al] vehicles."
"detects lane markings, road edges, and the presence of vehicles and objects to intelligently keep your vehicle in its driving lane," per Tesla."
"Tesla's done a lot of good things, in my calculation, but they did this inadequately," family attorney Lynn Shumway told The Independent. "I think the technology is fantastic, but not the way Tesla is implementing it."
"intentionally misrepresented the safety of their vehicles"
A Tesla Model X operating a driving assistance feature crossed the road line and struck a tractor-trailer, killing the driver’s wife, two daughters, son-in-law, and the family dog. Plaintiff Nathan Blaine alleges Tesla and Elon Musk intentionally misrepresented vehicle and driver-assistance safety and that those claims created a false sense of security. The lawsuit targets the Autosteer feature and asserts failures of lane departure warning and emergency lane departure avoidance systems. Autosteer is described as a beta feature that detects lane markings, road edges, and nearby objects to keep the vehicle in its lane. A family attorney called the technology fantastic but implemented inadequately.
