A Berlin doctor has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of 15 patients under palliative care. Initially suspected in four deaths, investigations revealed evidence linking him to a broader number of fatalities between September 2021 and July 2022. The patients, aged 25 to 94, mostly died at home. Allegedly, the doctor used unauthorized anesthetics, leading to respiratory failure. Presently in custody, he has not responded to charges. Prosecutors aim for severe sentencing, including a life ban from practicing medicine.
Prosecutors aim to establish that the suspect bears particularly severe guilt, which would mean he wouldn't be eligible for release after 15 years, as is usual in Germany.
The doctor is accused of administering an anesthetic and muscle relaxer without consent, allegedly causing respiratory arrest and death within minutes.
