Cybercrime, drones, arson: Attacks on German infrastructure DW 09/30/2025
"In the same week that drones were spotted over several European airports, a cyberattack against security software used by many of those same hubs including Berlin Airport left passengers and personnel scrambling. At the same time, Germany's Deutsche Bahn rail service experienced the latest in a series of high-level sabotage incidents. Similar cyberattacksare experienced by private companies with increasing regularity costing the economy 289 billion ($339 billion), according to Bitkom, the umbrella organization for the digital economy in Germany."
"Moscow is also being blamed for the recent drone incursions across Europe. "That it could be a private actor is extremely unlikely. These are professionals working with expensive equipment; it is highly likely to be a state actor," said Manuel Atug, an infrastructure security expert with the think tank AG Kritis. Atug surmised that the purpose of the attacks, both physical and online, could be " destabilizing society from inside. So that they lose trust in institutions and the government.""
Germany is experiencing almost daily attacks on critical infrastructure, including cyberattacks, drone incursions, arson, and sabotage. Airports, including Berlin Airport, and rail services such as Deutsche Bahn have been disrupted by both digital and physical incidents. Private companies report increasing regularity of cyberattacks, costing the economy €289 billion ($339 billion) according to Bitkom. About 68% of incidents are attributed to crime syndicates, while many firms trace attacks to Russia or China. Experts assess drone incursions likely involve state-level resources and aim to destabilize society and erode trust in institutions. National intelligence reports and leadership warn the security situation is unusually serious.
