"After Germany beat Turkey to win the Eurobasket crown on Sunday, there can be no doubt that the country is enjoying its greatest-ever era of basketball. Just two years after winning the World Championship and one year on from Germany's women winning gold in the 3x3 at the Paris Olympics, the glory days continued as Franz Wagner, Dennis Schroder and Maodo Lo helped Germany take the EuroBasket."
"After a long-standing resistance to allowing student athletes to profit from their own image, the damn was broken in 2021 when NIL was introduced. The policy allows US college athletes to earn money through sponsorships, endorsements, social media without affecting their status as an amateur. Amateurism is no longer really a concept in US college sports though, after the House vs. NCAA settlement in June of this year that allows colleges to directly pay their athletes."
Germany secured the EuroBasket title, continuing a peak period of success after a recent World Championship and Olympic 3x3 gold. Key contributors included NBA players Franz Wagner, Dennis Schroder and Maodo Lo. Domestic basketball in Germany has markedly strengthened, with the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) becoming a stable and exciting league and German clubs increasingly competitive in European competitions. The 2021 introduction of NIL allows US college athletes to earn money from sponsorships and endorsements, and the House vs. NCAA settlement permits colleges to directly pay athletes. These changes are reshaping player development and pose significant challenges for the future German talent pipeline. Robert Wintermantel is head of sports and finance for the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL).
