Uli Grotsch, Germany's Federal Police Commissioner, has condemned police officers who join the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, stating such membership is incompatible with law enforcement duties. He insists that officers openly supporting the AfD should face dismissal. This follows the domestic intelligence agency's classification of the AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist group, noting its potential threat to Germany's democratic order, although the agency temporarily suspended this designation pending legal proceedings. Grotsch cites the need for law enforcement to uphold democratic values that could be undermined by extremist affiliations.
AfD membership and working as a police officer are incompatible. For me, commitment means openly supporting the party, running for local or city council or even for the Bundestag.
The domestic intelligence agency classified the AfD as a 'confirmed right-wing extremist' organization, stating there was evidence that the party threatens Germany's free democratic order.
