Germany: Hope fades for stranded humpback whale's survival
"We did everything we could to give it a chance. This is a unique tragedy. But it chose this path for himself,” said Till Backhaus, environment minister for the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania."
"We would have to encourage it vigorously [to free itself], which would be futile because it no longer has the strength,” said rescue expert Burkard Baschek."
"At some point we must let it go,” Baschek stated, citing 'respect for nature' in the decision to cease rescue efforts."
Authorities in northern Germany have created a restricted zone around a stranded whale, allowing it to die peacefully. Environment Minister Till Backhaus stated that all possible rescue efforts have been exhausted, and the whale is now lying in shallow waters with weak breathing. Rescue expert Burkard Baschek emphasized that further attempts to move the whale would be futile and could be considered animal cruelty. The young male humpback whale had been wandering the Baltic Sea for weeks before becoming stranded.
