Germany's 'rapid militarization' threatens basic rights
Fundamental rights are basic freedoms and equality guaranteed by law to every person, protected in Germany by the first 19 articles of the Basic Law. A 2026 Fundamental Rights Report warns that these rights are increasingly pressured even in a rule-of-law country. Threats include reduced efforts to combat climate change, scarcity of affordable housing, and technical standards on social media that undermine informal self-determination. The greatest danger is when security concerns dominate domestic policy and lead to military buildup. The report identifies current triggers such as Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the war in Gaza, and the war in Iran.
