'Messerverbot': Berlin introduces knife ban on public transport
Briefly

Berlin has implemented a weapons ban on all public transport, prohibiting items like knives, batons, and electric shock devices. The measure aims to reduce violent crime and increase safety. Certain exceptions apply, including for police, firefighters, and specific professions requiring knives. The ban does not cover bus and tram stops, nor does it apply to inaccessible knives in bags. Violations may result in severe penalties, although initial enforcement seems limited to informational brochures distributed in transit areas.
Starting Thursday, members of the public are no longer permitted to carry weapons on public transport in Berlin, including all S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains, buses and trams.
The new restrictions are comprehensive: folding knives, switchblades, and other blades are explicitly banned, along with alarm guns, irritant weapons, and crossbows.
The ban does not extend to bus and tram stops. Nor does it extend to knives which people are carrying somewhere they can't easily access.
Despite a relatively muted roll-out - not extending further than brochures handed out in transit areas - the penalties for violation can be severe.
