In Baruth, a small town near Berlin, energy companies like Red Bull have acquired significant groundwater rights, utilizing less than half, but plans to increase usage are in progress. Despite being in one of Germany's driest regions affected by climate change, local authorities, including the mayor, are confident about groundwater sustainability. However, a local citizen is challenging the transparency and sustainability of this operation, questioning the subsidies received by Red Bull through legal means.
The mayor asserts there is sufficient groundwater, stating, 'We are using a maximum of 25% of the water available. I don't believe that we are an area that will have any problems in the near future.'
Concerns about sustainability led a citizen to launch a legal challenge, with lawyer Ida Westphal stating, 'the aim was to get the local authority to disclose what Red Bull is getting in terms of subsidies.'
