Vernon Katz obituary
"The Gita was translated and discussed on land, sea, and in the air, in townhouses and country houses, by the Thames and by the Ganges, in the Alps, and on the canals of Venice. I had never known such happiness as this work with Maharishi."
"I thought the people there were angels, they were such good people. I love this country, because it saved my life."
Vernon Katz, who died at 98, was a Kindertransport refugee from Germany who escaped the Holocaust. He became an Oxford scholar, studying Indian philosophy. In 1960, he met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who taught him transcendental meditation. Katz assisted in translating the Bhagavad-Gita, which sold over a million copies. He later translated the Brahma Sutra and published Conversations with Maharishi. Katz also wrote a memoir about his childhood in Germany. He was born into a Jewish family and escaped to Britain in 1939, where his parents later joined him.
