Germany: Number of politically motivated crimes reach record high
Briefly

In 2024, Germany saw a significant rise in politically motivated crimes, totaling over 84,000 — a 40% increase compared to the previous year. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt identified antisemitism and right-wing extremism as the primary threats to democracy, with right-wing crimes comprising over half of the total incidents. The increase is largely attributed to the Israel-Hamas conflict and the political climate surrounding the German elections. Dobrindt emphasized the need for stronger law enforcement measures, including longer prison sentences, to combat this alarming trend.
"Last year, we had to deal with a very massive increase in right-wing, politically motivated crimes. That is why we will continue our fight against right-wing extremism and right-wing motivated crimes."
"A suspected antisemitic motive was recorded in 6,236 cases registered. The 21% increase includes 2,832 cases motivated by antisemitism, registered under the topics of 'Israel' and 'Palestine'."
