Can a diet really ease lipoedema? Sunniva's journey to pain relief and weight loss
Briefly

Lipoedema is a common but little-known disease, primarily affecting women, characterized by excess fatty tissue on the thighs, calves, and sometimes arms. Patients often experience pain and a lack of understanding from society regarding their condition. Sunniva Kwapen, diagnosed after years of struggle, reflects on her journey with diets that have had little success. A recent doctoral study at NTNU shows that weight loss through dieting is unlikely for those with lipoedema. The disorder remains poorly understood, with limited knowledge among medical professionals and the public, highlighting a need for greater awareness and research.
"After I was diagnosed, I have become kinder to myself. I know that it is not my fault that my body is the way it is. But I often hear from both society and the health service that women like me are just fat and lazy, and that we need to toughen up," says Sunniva Kwapen.
"Despite this being a disease that affects many women, little is known about it, which is rather thought-provoking," said Julianne Lundanes, a former PhD candidate at NTNU.
