Short-sighted NI kids treated differently to the rest of the UK
Briefly

Northern Ireland does not allow NHS child vouchers to be used for myopia management, while other UK regions permit such funding. Myopia affects about one in three people in the UK and can worsen during childhood. Myopia management treatments, including specialised contact lenses, can slow or stop progression of short-sightedness. NHS vouchers worth £40–£60 cover ordinary glasses for children but not treatment-focused lenses or contacts. Optometrists describe the restriction as frustrating and recommend offering management when clinically indicated. Some families pay privately, with examples of monthly costs around £30 and initial totals near £300. The Department of Health says evidence is not yet sufficient to support funded use.
