Christine Jackson, after becoming pregnant and researching childbirth, switched from her OBGYN to a midwifery practice, resulting in a positive unmedicated birth. Her experience highlighted the lack of birth education and support for women in Staten Island. As an HR director, she noted many returning employees felt disempowered by their birth experiences. Committed to change, she became certified as a childbirth educator and founded Sunny Side Up Birth Co., which offers childbirth education, community events, and support for mothers.
At 29 weeks pregnant, I left my OBGYN and joined a midwifery practice. I went on to have a positive, unmedicated birth of a 9-pound, 13-ounce baby with a compound elbow who was sunny side up in labor.
When I returned to work, that philosophy really began to resonate. As an HR director, I supported employees through their maternity leave, and so many were returning with stories of birth that felt disempowering.
Jackson said she realized that Staten Island could benefit from more birth education and supportive resources. She became certified as a childbirth educator and made it her mission to make confident, more informed birth more accessible.
I knew every woman deserved to feel strong, informed and completely in awe of what my body could do. At the very least, walk away from birth without trauma.
