HSE in Cork promises brand new surgical hub will begin treating patients by September
A new surgical hub at Cork University Hospital in Wilton is expected to be operational by the end of September. The facility has been completed and handed over to the Health Service Executive, and teams are fitting it with high-tech surgical equipment to support the first patients. Commissioning, fit-out, and recruitment are underway, along with staffing and service planning to ensure safe, high-quality care from the outset. The hub includes four operating theatres, two minor procedure rooms, dedicated recovery and discharge areas, outpatient and consultation facilities, and clinical and support accommodation. It is intended to provide planned day case procedures and consultations for thousands of patients each year across the wider region.
"A brand-new surgical hub, which will deliver extra capacity for non-complex elective and day procedures for patients across Munster, is expected to be operational by the end of September."
"The building, located at the hospital in Wilton, has been completed and handed over to the Health Service Executive, whose teams are now focused on fitting out the hub with high-tech surgical equipment, in order to support the first patients from September."
"Preparatory work for staffing and service planning is already underway, "to ensure the hub delivers safe, high-quality care from the outset," following several examples nationwide of brand new units that were fit to move into, but didn't have the staff in order to become operational."
"Four operating theatres, two minor procedure rooms, dedicated recovery and discharge areas, outpatient and consultation facilities as well as clinical and support accommodation will all be included as part of the hub, which the HSE says will provide care and consultations for thousands of patients every year."
