The French government has introduced a targeted plan to address the pressing issue of healthcare access in 'medical deserts' by designating 151 priority areas requiring additional doctor support. From September 1, GPs will be tasked with outreach work in these locations, where approximately two-thirds of France faces healthcare challenges. This initiative will also prioritize newly-qualified doctors, marking a significant step in improving healthcare distribution. The government acknowledges that while this effort does not resolve all access issues, it represents an essential first step benefiting around two million patients.
Yannick Neuder stated, 'With this map, which identifies 151 priority inter-communities for access to healthcare, we're not solving medical deserts, since they affect 87 percent of the country, but it’s a first step that will benefit around two million patients.'
The initiative aims for GPs to engage in outreach work in the priority areas, emphasizing a collective effort with local health authorities to tackle severe healthcare shortages.
