California State University signed a $17 million agreement with OpenAI to provide ChatGPT Edu to more than half a million students and faculty. A university-wide survey with over 94,000 respondents found 65% of students and 59% of faculty skeptical that AI benefits education overall. Eighty percent of students said they would not be comfortable turning in AI-generated work as their own. About four out of five students worried about AI’s effects on jobs, creativity, and the environment, despite 84% reporting ChatGPT use and 64% reporting positive learning effects. Roughly half used AI regularly, and resistance was described as a “groundswelling of resistance.”
