Florida Memorial University appointed alumnus William McCormick Jr. as permanent president, the first alumnus to hold the role. Seven trustees, including the alumni association president, say other board members illegally made the hire after an unofficial early-August meeting. Brandon K. Dumas, elected board chair in May, disputes claims that he lost the chair position and alleges the move restored former chair Walter Weatherington. Dumas and allies called the action a "well-thought-out coup" and have filed injunctions to stop certain board members from conducting business. The university issued a press release endorsing McCormick and quoted Weatherington and McCormick in support.
