Leiden University Lecture Hall / Civic Architects
"The first university in the Netherlands was founded in Leiden in 1575. The institute is a familiar sight in the historic city centre with its historic buildings. Less well known is the fact that the university's "Gorlaeus" buildings were constructed in the second half of the 20th century, marking the development of a modern knowledge campus outside the city centre: today's Leiden Bio Science Park."

Leiden University was founded in Leiden in 1575 and remains visually prominent in the historic city centre with its historic buildings. The university expanded physically beyond the city centre during the second half of the 20th century when the Gorlaeus buildings were constructed. The Gorlaeus development initiated the formation of a modern knowledge campus located outside the historic core. That campus evolved into today's Leiden Bio Science Park, concentrating life-sciences research and campus facilities. The campus represents a deliberate spatial shift from the historic urban fabric to a purpose-built research and innovation district. The transition reflects broader postwar trends in higher-education spatial planning and campus specialization.
