Prestigious university to open new campus in San Francisco
"There are 1,295 students currently enrolled at the California College of the Arts, the only private art and design school of its kind remaining in the Bay Area. Under the terms of the new agreement, the academic year will go on as planned and students who are on track to graduate within that time frame will be able to complete their degrees, Howse said."
"In a Tuesday news release, CCA President David Howse cited "underlying financial challenges" the century-old institution had been working to resolve for nearly two years, including declining enrollment within its tuition-driven business model, demographic shifts and a "persistent structural deficit" on its current programs."
"Based in Nashville, Vanderbilt University has also announced recent expansions in New York City, with classes expected to kick off later this fall, and West Palm Beach, Florida, where classes are slated to be underway in fall 2029. The university's expansion to California is expected to begin in the 2027-2028 academic year."
California College of the Arts will close at the end of the 2026–2027 academic year, and Vanderbilt University will take over student programming and campus ownership near Potrero Hill. CCA cited underlying financial challenges including declining enrollment, demographic shifts, and a persistent structural deficit. The academic year will proceed as planned and students on track to graduate will be able to complete degrees. Students needing more time will be assisted with transfers to accredited institutions to complete degrees without interruption, though admission to Vanderbilt is not guaranteed. Vanderbilt plans to begin California operations in 2027–2028 and to operate a CCA Institute responsible for alumni engagement and the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Arts.
