Students say law school isn't prepping them to use AI in practice, new survey shows
The Thomson Reuters Institute’s 2026 Law Student Pulse Survey polled 1,874 U.S. law students from April 6 to April 19. Only 30% of third-year students believe their school prepares them for artificial intelligence in practice, leaving 70% to learn best practices independently. Just under half (48%) report that AI policies vary by professor, and 15% say there is no curriculum integration across their institution. Thirty-two percent disagree that their school provides the AI skills needed for their future career. Three of four students agree learning AI is essential, while 74% agree overreliance on AI will hinder development of critical legal skills.
