Cassie Donegan won the Miss America pageant on September 7 at the Walt Disney Theater in Orlando, becoming the 98th Miss America. Donegan, 28, is an actor, singer, and CEO of Southern Sitters who began competing in pageants at age nine. She received $50,000 after being crowned and an additional $3,000 for a preliminary talent award, on top of previously earned $27,000 including a $15,000 Miss New York scholarship. Those scholarships allowed her to graduate "100% free of any college debt." She earned a bachelor's in musical theater from Belmont University and is pursuing a bachelor's in leadership with a counseling concentration at Ames Christian University. She describes Miss America as a major scholarship provider for women and credits it with enabling her academic and career choices.
