""My first reaction was, 'No, I don't like the word officer,'" Shehu recalls. "I'm a faculty, I'm a researcher, I'm an educator. What is this officer thing?""
""We are thinking of ways to make every graduate of the university have some AI literacy," says Shehu, who became George Mason's CAIO in September. "Universities create technologies.""
Amarda Shehu became George Mason's first chief AI officer (CAIO) in September after leading the Institute for Digital Innovation. The CAIO role coordinates how AI tools will change workflows for faculty and staff, promotes AI research and partnerships with companies, and develops curriculum strategies to teach AI skills for competitive entry-level job markets. Universities aim to provide AI literacy to every graduate. Higher education institutions have historically incubated major technology companies. Several major universities have recently appointed inaugural CAIOs, aligning with private sector and government trends and consulting recommendations.
