Danna Avila, a 22-year-old UC Berkeley student and Chick-fil-A employee from San Jose, was surprised by CEO Andrew T. Cathy with a $25,000 scholarship at the Emeryville location. Avila is a first-generation college student who has maintained strong grades while volunteering in her community and taking on leadership roles at the restaurant. Her family attended the celebration, moved by her achievement. Avila plans to attend medical school to become an oncologist and hopes to address systemic issues in healthcare. Chick-fil-A has awarded over $200 million in scholarships since 1973, with the company investing $29 million this year across more than 16,000 team members.
