University of Florida Hires Interim President
""A neutral university, paradoxically, in this nation at the moment would be a conservative university. Not espousing conservative values, certainly not indoctrinating in conservatism," Landry said. "We'd be neutral. We wouldn't choose sides.""
""I saw things at Columbia that suggested an alignment between some faculty and students that I think encouraged the students to do things that were more reckless," Landry told UF's board."
Donald Landry was tapped unanimously by the University of Florida Board of Trustees as interim president, replacing Kent Fuchs effective Sept. 1. Landry is chair emeritus of Columbia's Department of Medicine and president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The appointment follows the Florida Board of Governors' rejection of Santa Ono over past support for diversity, equity and inclusion despite trustees' approval. Landry will assume the role pending contract negotiations and Board of Governors approval; contract details have not been released. Landry pledged a neutral university, warned neutrality may presently read as conservative, and criticized Columbia's response to antisemitism amid protests.
