Ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs exposed on Oahu shore
Briefly

Large ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs have been uncovered along Oahu's western Waianae Coast due to shifting sands. Carved 1,000 years ago, these 26 petroglyphs stretch over 131 feet along the beach in front of the Pililaau Army Recreation Center. Most of the carvings are anthropomorphic stick figures, and unusual features include fingers on some figures. Local Native Hawaiian Glen Kila interprets one significant petroglyph as representing Maui, highlighting its cultural and religious symbolism in Hawaiian mythology and heritage.
The petroglyphs were carved into the shoreline sandstone 1,000 years ago in front of what is now the Pililaau Army Recreation Center.
The largest of the petroglyphs is more than eight feet tall and eight feet wide and two of the large stick figures have fingers, which is unusual for this type of petroglyph.
