Experience: a postcard delivered 121 years late led me to my long-lost family
Briefly

A postcard from 1903 addressed to Lydia Davies was discovered by the Swansea Building Society. The staff sought to connect with Lydia's descendants. Among them was Ewart, Lydia's brother, who was later identified as the grandfather of a person involved in the story. Upon learning about the postcard, the individual contacted their aunt, excited to share this link to their family history. A BBC producer facilitated the presentation of the postcard to the descendant at the West Glamorgan Archive Service, creating a unique opportunity to document this familial connection.
It was strange to hold something my grandfather had bought as a boy. The postcard had been passed on to the West Glamorgan Archive Service, which had established Lydia was 16, the eldest of six children living at the address in 1903.
I called my aunt Rosemary, who lives in San Francisco, and she was very excited to hear the news. I then phoned the building society and was put in touch with a BBC producer.
The head office of the Swansea Building Society had recently received a postcard postmarked 1903. Staff were hoping to trace one of Lydia Davies’ descendants.
I had worked on my family tree and knew immediately that Ewart was my grandfather. Though he had died before I was born, I still had one link with him.
