Hagia Sophia's Dome Undergoes Restoration to Withstand Earthquakes - Medievalists.net
Briefly

Turkish authorities have initiated a major restoration project on Hagia Sophia's dome to bolster the nearly 1,500-year-old structure against earthquakes. This effort, one of the most extensive in its history, involves removing and restoring the lead cover and reinforcing weak points identified in recent seismic analyses. The dome, a unique architectural marvel, has survived previous earthquakes but poses ongoing risks. Ahmet Gülç, part of the restoration team, noted that some areas of the dome need reinforcement, emphasizing the importance of making it more earthquake-resistant.
The dome isn't perfectly round. There are segments that need attention. We've found some areas filled with rubble or patched with wood. We're working to balance the structure better.
Hagia Sophia has a long history with earthquakes. Its original dome collapsed in 558, just 21 years after the church's completion, requiring a complete rebuild.
