Eugene Loveland was born September 11, 1920, in Anderson, Indiana, and grew up in the U.S. and Europe while his father worked for General Motors. He enlisted in the Navy immediately after December 7, 1941, trained on bombers and the F6F Hellcat, and flew missions over the South Pacific and Japan, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for sinking a Japanese battleship. After the war he worked as a salesman and executive for Shell Oil, married Joan, raised five children, and moved to Houston in 1972. He now has 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and spends later years welcoming and inspiring others.
