An Iraq Veteran's Cooking Show Mixes Food and Feelings
""When you look back and start piecing things together, he had a lot of medical bills, he was having trouble with the bank and housing, his job and the relationships that he had.""
""I thought I would be more adjusted, but life has a way of showing you that you don't know what you're talking about.""
""That's why last year Brown debuted Eat Your Feelings, an online cooking show that incorporates honest discussions about grief, loneliness, and stress.""
Cory Brown's unit, which provided convoy security in Iraq, lost over 20 soldiers to suicide after returning home. Brown's close friend, Kevin Zachary, died by suicide in 2019, prompting Brown to reflect on the struggles veterans face, including financial and relational issues. Brown himself experienced difficulties adjusting to civilian life, including a divorce and suicidal thoughts. To address these challenges, he created 'Eat Your Feelings,' an online cooking show that encourages veterans to discuss mental health openly while cooking.
