Choreographer and performer Andrea Parson faced a profound personal tragedy when her sister, Christina, was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic allowed Parson to spend valuable time with her sister before she passed away in August 2020. In her grief, Parson channeled her emotions into a performance art piece called 'You Can't Be Serious,' which debuted in November 2023. Parson's work reflects her journey through loss and is aimed at sharing her story within her community, receiving accolades along the way.
"I was writing a lot during the time she was sick, not intending to make anything, but it was just my way of processing the unknown."
"I didn't think she was going to die. I really didn't. I didn't see that as a possibility."
