Animation techniques vary in how they portray motion and feeling. Stop-motion animation stands out as the most time-consuming and labor-intensive approach, offering tangible physical presence. Laika, known for Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, is returning after a seven-year feature hiatus with Wildwood, a fantasy epic featuring anthropomorphic animals and detailed woodland environments. The story follows Prue McKeel, a young girl from Portland, who enters a magical forest to find her baby brother Mac, abducted by crows. The film is based on the novel Wildwood by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis, whose folk-tale and mysticism-inspired illustrations align with Laika’s landscapes and creatures. The project has been in development for 15 years and is directed by Travis Knight, Laika’s CEO.
