Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are reuniting for '28 Years Later', their first sequel and the start of a planned trilogy. Previously, they had considered turning their space-horror film 'Sunshine' into a franchise, but its poor box office meant those plans never progressed. Despite its lackluster reception, 'Sunshine' has since gained a cult following, partly due to its impressive cast that includes future stars like Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh. Boyle acknowledged their interest in continuing 'Sunshine' if it had been more successful.
"Originally, when we were doing it, Alex wrote two other parts," Boyle explained, discussing plans for Sunshine that never materialized due to the film's poor box office performance.
According to Boyle, despite Sunshine's initial flop, both he and Garland were still intrigued by the idea of expanding its universe if it had garnered enough success.
