Jafar Panahi, despite a 20-year filmmaking ban, continues to challenge the restrictions imposed on him by the Iranian government. Initially not a political filmmaker, Panahi's work is shaped by the oppressive system he critiques. After being released from Evin prison following a severe hunger strike, he returned to the Cannes Film Festival, presenting his film 'It Was Just an Accident' after two decades. His legal battles culminated in an overturned sentence, yet he maintains a clandestine approach to filmmaking, resisting official censorship.
To make a film in the official way in Iran, you have to submit your script to the Islamic Guidance Ministry for approval. This is something I cannot do. I made another clandestine film which I smuggled out.
In my films, even those who behave badly are shaped by the system, not personal choice.
