Hoppers review fun Pixar flick about a teen trying to talk to the animals and save them from an evil developer
"Mabel, voiced by Piper Curda, is a teenager who lives with her grandma and learns from this wise older person the importance of loving nature, particularly the peaceful woodland glade near their house and the associated importance of acceptance and forgiveness for people that you maybe don't get along with."
"When the evil Mayor Jerry says he intends to destroy this glade to make way for a freeway, Mabel realises that the only way to stop him legally is to repopulate the glade with the beavers and other animals who have mysteriously vanished."
"Having uncovered an extraordinary conspiracy about what is going on in the inner sanctum of the university where she is enrolled as a student, Mabel must somehow make contact with the animals, to persuade them that it is in their best interest to do what she wants them to do."
Hoppers is a family animation directed by Daniel Chong and co-produced by Pixar veteran Pete Docter. The film follows Mabel, a teenager living with her grandmother who learns to value nature and the local woodland glade. When Mayor Jerry threatens to destroy the glade for a freeway, Mabel discovers a conspiracy at her university and must convince vanished animals to return and repopulate the area to save it legally. The film explores environmental protection, animal communication, and acceptance while referencing Avatar, Inception, and The Lion King. Despite some narrative hesitation about villain characterization, the film moves entertainingly with humorous moments, including a memorable hostile shark cameo.
