Oscar winner Ryan Coogler once scored a touchdown against Marshawn Lynch
"I would meet players like Maurice Jones-Drew and Marshawn Lynch, players I would play against, and I would be like, 'Man, they are a lot better than me.' You come across players like, 'Oh, that's something different happening there.' That was how I could see early that maybe football wasn't going to be what I did forever."
"It was a triumphant Sunday night at the Academy Awards for Coogler and his latest film, 'Sinners,' a vampiric thriller Coogler wrote that is set in 1930s Mississippi. The film earned a record 16 Oscar nominations and had wins in four categories - including Coogler winning his first Oscar in the best original screenplay category."
Ryan Coogler, a 39-year-old Oakland native and Richmond resident, achieved major success at the Academy Awards with his film 'Sinners,' a 1930s Mississippi-set vampire thriller that received 16 Oscar nominations and won four awards, including best original screenplay for Coogler. Before becoming an acclaimed filmmaker, Coogler was a standout wide receiver at Saint Mary's College High School in Berkeley, where he played during the school's successful football period, including a league championship in 2001. During his junior year in high school, Coogler competed against future NFL star Marshawn Lynch, also from Oakland's north side. Coogler has reflected on encountering elite athletes like Lynch and Maurice Jones-Drew, recognizing their exceptional abilities compared to his own and realizing early that football would not be his permanent career path.
