Google is pursuing a multifaceted strategy to dismantle Lighthouse, a phishing-as-a-service operation that powers global SMS phishing (smishing) campaigns. Lighthouse has impacted over one million victims across 120 countries and reportedly exposed between 12.7 million and 115 million U.S. credit card records. Google has filed legal claims under RICO, the Lanham Act, and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act against 25 unnamed individuals believed to be in China to target core infrastructure. Google is also backing bipartisan U.S. legislation and rolling out new AI-based protections. Attackers impersonate legitimate brands and used at least 107 fake website templates featuring Google branding.
