David P. Ruschke will become Chief Judge of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board at USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, VA on May 23, 2016. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board plays a critical role in the patent ecosystem, especially since the launch of post-grant trials authorized in the America Invents Act of 2011. David's breadth of experience in global patent opposition proceedings and deep understanding of intellectual property positions him to lead the Board. Nathan Kelley will return to the Office of the Solicitor as Deputy General Counsel for Intellectual Property Law and Solicitor after ten months as PTAB Acting Chief Judge. Ruschke previously served as Chief Patent Counsel at Medtronic CardioVascular, managing a team of 15 and overseeing litigation, prosecution, due diligence, licensing, and other IP matters.
