Ju Wenjun has claimed the 2025 FIDE Women's World Championship, defeating Tan Zhongyi with an impressive score of 6-2. This victory marks Ju's fifth title, making her one of only four women to achieve this feat. The match included a notable stretch where Ju secured four consecutive wins, an unprecedented achievement in women's chess since the 1950s. Ju, who has held the title since 2018, extends her reign as champion, facing Tan after a long-standing rivalry that has spanned nearly a decade.
Her victory is also the latest chapter in a personal rivalry nearly a decade in the making. In 2017, Tan eliminated Ju en route to becoming world champion.
Even after falling behind early with a loss in the second game, she stormed back, breaking the match wide open with four consecutive wins from the fifth through eighth games.
With the victory, Ju becomes only the fourth woman in history to win the title five times, joining a storied class that includes Vera Menchik and Nona Gaprindashvili.
Her most decisive triumph to date, winning three games to spare, established her dominance in the world of women's chess.
