J.J. Spaun made an impressive debut at Oakmont Country Club during the U.S. Open, finishing his first round with a bogey-free score of 4-under par. His performance included a record 31 on the front nine, where he made four birdies. Spaun’s strong putting contributed significantly to his score, as he made 90 feet of putts and avoided three-putts on the challenging greens. In reflecting on his experience, he noted the importance of grinding through tough situations on the course without prior expectations.
"I kind of came out here with no prior history at Oakmont, not really knowing what to expect, even U.S. Open-wise. This is only my second one," Spaun said.
"You're obviously going to have to grind when you're out of position, and I did that really well today," Spaun said of Oakmont.
"I think today was one of my best putting days I've had maybe all year, especially inside like the makeable range putts, inside 12 feet or so," Spaun said.
"It's challenging in every sort of aspect or variable in golf," Spaun said of Oakmont.
