April 15 marks Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball, commemorating Robinson's debut in 1947 when he broke the color barrier. The Los Angeles Dodgers, under manager Dave Roberts, began a tradition of gathering players and staff at the Jackie Robinson statue at Dodger Stadium to celebrate his legacy. The ceremony has seen participation from other teams, including the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals. Players, including Jason Heyward, have expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor Robinson. The tradition will continue in 2025 with the Colorado Rockies joining the Dodgers for the commemoration.
"Amazing opportunity," Heyward said after delivering his message. "I feel like timing is everything, for all of us in every walk of life. Super cool, 14-year Major Leaguer, to have a chance to address everyone that came out here wanting to show support, pay homage and acknowledge Jackie Robinson Day."
"It's a great day. And kind of in conjunction along with the Nationals, I think that we're starting to establish a pretty cool tradition for the players, to get them together in front of Jackie's statue, and just have a little bit of time to reflect and go back years and understand impact, legacy and responsibility to us," Roberts said last year during the meeting at the statue.
