Former Dodger Stepped In to Help Mookie Betts Amid 2025 Slump
"I mean, me and Mook go way back, so for him, I definitely made the exception of coming out and going out there and spending a weekend with him and trying to get him back on track. It was fun. We did it a few times. I did it in LA, too. I mean, I think we built a lot of trust. He trusts me."
"I feel like I just have a really good understanding of his swing and his mind. Mookie's, you know, unbelievable talent as everybody knows. It's just, sometimes this game, it just derails you sometimes, and you need someone to lock it back in."
Mookie Betts struggled significantly during the 2025 season, posting career-low batting average (.258), on-base percentage (.326), slugging percentage (.406), and OPS. Despite playing 150 games and maintaining strong defensive performance, his offensive production declined substantially. The Dodgers organization attributed his slump partly to weight loss during an early-season illness that affected his power and balance. His performance was particularly poor mid-season before improving toward year's end. To address the struggles, the Dodgers, manager Dave Roberts, and Betts pursued various solutions. Former Dodger J.D. Martinez spent time with Betts, offering swing and mental guidance based on their established relationship and mutual trust.
