Santiago Espinal's 'seamless' fit bodes well for Opening Day
"Dave Roberts suggested it's hard to see a scenario where Santiago Espinal doesn't open the season in the majors with the Dodgers. Said he has fit in "seamlessly" with the group."
"Second base isn't the only spot he can play, though, as he also played at first base, third base and shortstop as well as left and right field in 2025. His utility depth could make up for Kiké Hernandez's injury absence and land him a spot on the roster."
"You've got to compete everyday when you come here. You've got to compete in anything you do. Whether it's hitting, whether it's different you've got to compete and this is what it's all about."
Santiago Espinal joined the Los Angeles Dodgers on a minor league deal shortly after spring training began and has quickly made a positive impression. Manager Dave Roberts indicated Espinal will almost certainly be on the major league roster for Opening Day, noting he has fit in seamlessly with the group. Espinal's primary appeal lies in his defensive versatility, capable of playing second base, first base, third base, shortstop, and both outfield positions. He is competing for the second base spot vacated by Tommy Edman's ankle surgery recovery and could help address Kiké Hernandez's injury absence. While Espinal struggled offensively in 2025 with a .575 OPS and minimal power production, he has performed well during spring training with a .588 batting average across limited appearances.
