Savy King, a defender for Angel City, collapsed during a National Women's Soccer League match, prompting emergency medical attention. After being hospitalized and diagnosed with a heart abnormality, she successfully underwent surgery. King's family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the soccer community while she recovers. The incident has raised concerns over game safety, leading the NWSL to consider policy reviews regarding how to handle emergencies during matches, emphasizing player well-being.
King's family released a joint statement thanking the team's medical staff, King's fellow players and the hospital medical staff for her care. 'On behalf of our entire family, along with Savy, we have been so moved by the love and support from Angel City players, staff, fans and community, as well as soccer fans across the country,' the statement said.
In no world should that game have continued, said Trinity Rodman, emphasizing the emotional toll the incident took on the players involved and raising questions about the integrity of the competition under such conditions.
The NWSL stated that it would review its policies to determine if changes needed to be made, acknowledging that emergencies could render the continuation of a game inadvisable for everyone involved.
