Jon Yao of LA's Kato wins James Beard Award

Jon Yao, chef at Kato in Los Angeles, won the Best Chef: California award at the James Beard Awards on June 16. Celebrated for his contemporary Taiwanese cuisine, he emphasized the importance of immigrant narratives in his acceptance speech and urged fellow chefs to advocate for their communities. Kato has also earned a Michelin star. Other Los Angeles nominees included Tobin Shea and Gusto Bread. The James Beard Awards recognized over 100 finalists in various categories this year.
